A woodland meadow of Oregon white oak trees, seemingly illuminated from within by strong June sun, and framed by conifer forest. This is a landscape native to western Oregon, where fragments of oak savanna still remain in and around the Willamette Valley. There’s something special about it that has always inspired me. I painted this scene large to convey the sense of space and aliveness of the forest and meadow, and to offer a seemingly life-sized invitation to step within.

Evening sun lights up a ridge in Oregon’s Devil’s Staircase Wilderness. I had the great fortune to be invited on a cross country adventure into the heart of this trackless, dense, pristine rainforest to visit the eponymous waterfall. Incredible, exhausting, worth it! So grateful for the years of hard work by conservationists and our representatives to protect this amazing place. The painting uses loose, dynamic brush work to express the complex patterns and light of the forest.

Technically this is the trail to Warrior Rock on the northern tip of Sauvie Island near Portland, Oregon. I thought this was a better name, since hiking the trail is a magical, seven mile journey through a towering forest of giant cottonwood trees, with occasional access to beaches along the Columbia River to the east. This painting expresses the morning sunlight on spring foliage, and the movement of fresh breezes from the river.

This is a scene of primal forest in Oregon’s Devil’s Staircase Wilderness. The location is very remote, hard to reach, and even harder to move through. There are no trails, the brush is tall and dense, and the terrain extremely steep. Painting the fragmented light and complexity of ancient forest is a wonderful challenge, equal to the place. Here, the afternoon sun slants into the forest, barely reaching between the cool shadows. I can almost hear the elk moving through the canyon below.

Not far south of Corvallis, Oregon lies the William L. Finley Wildlife Refuge, known for its huge flocks of migratory birds in the winter months. Lesser known is the forest above the wetlands. An eclectic woodland of strange giants, from white oak to sitka spruce, grows on Mill Hill. I was inspired to capture the mystery of this woodland on a foggy, winter afternoon.

When the winter sun barely makes it over the ridgeline, the forest feels crisp and hazy at the same time. This little vignette along Eugene’s Ridgeline Trail shows an old maple tree hosting a little crop of licorice fern. I love the interesting color combinations the low sunlight brings.

The old growth forest at Opal Creek is some of the most stable and spectacular I’ve seen. Here, the summer sun slants into the forest and strikes light from the massive trees and ferns. I visited and captured the inspiration for this painting in the spring of 2020. That fall, massive wildfires forever changed this landscape. Like an increasing number of my works, this painting is a little snapshot of history. With any luck, the ancient forest will return someday.

Late morning brings tunnels of sunlight into the ancient forest along Rebel Creek, in Oregon's Cascade mountains. Early summer foliage glows in the sunlight among the trunks of massive Douglas fir, western hemlock and red cedar. Rebel Creek is part of the Three Sisters Wilderness, a tributary of the South Fork McKenzie River reaching high into the central mountain range. This original oil painting captures the freshness of color and light with a deft brush work.

Cool shadows pool along the turquoise waters of Opal Creek in the early spring. Opal Creek is one of Oregon's most pristine waterways, filtered through 32 square miles of towering forest preserved through conservation. Hiking here is a magical experience. This original painting expresses the mood of mystery, the deep blue-green of the river, and spots of light where the sun reaches into the steep canyon.
