While hiking from a remote part of the Three Sisters Wilderness below Broken Top over the pass to the Green Lakes Basin, I turned and beheld a lovely framing of what, in my opinion, is one of the most beautiful mountains in Oregon. From a distance, like many Oregon volcanic peaks, Broken top looks fairly uniform in color. The closer you get, the brighter the colors reveal themselves to be. Here, the mountain rises in the distance but hints its hidden rainbows. This interpretation of that view evokes the sense of remoteness, altitude and wide open spaces that make this one of my favorite places to explore.

I found the inspiration for this painting on one of the most epic days of adventure on a trip in September 2020. That night the big wind and firestorm hit, flattening our tent and bringing down big trees that made the ground shake. The aptly named Paradise Trail leads clockwise around the mountain from Timberline Lodge, with many miles of meadows and dreamy scenery to explore. Mt. Adams rises over 12,000 feet amid the wild, southern Washington wilderness. A bit farther north, a couple days’ trek in the Goat Rocks Wilderness offers amazing views of this peak in the late afternoon. One of our early long-haul backcountry trips as a family led us up the East Lostine valley and into this view, gateway to an alpine wonderland. Well worth the blisters and bugs. There’s so much to discover about expressing the sublime. I love how solid, distant landforms emerge from a few complementary gray tones and blues, and how shadow creates layers of distance.

Few places feel as calm and undisturbed as Waldo Lake and the nearby Diamond Peak Wilderness. Among the many things I love about mountains is the power to move us emotionally. Watching the sunset on the North Sister is breathtaking and hard to forget. The sense of distance, the rainbow colors of volcanic rock, and the remoteness of the wilderness tend to eclipse anything else that might occupy your mind. This painting aims to express that momentary sense of the sublime, something refreshingly beyond our influence.

This is one of my favorite views of Diamond Peak, looking south from Fuju Shelter. The dramatic spires and series of false summits rise into a misty cap against a clear, cold winter sky. I love the deep blues and purples of winter. Sometimes we tend to think of winter as a drab or colorless season, but I find it offers unique clarity and intensity. This painting aims to express those qualities.
