In the fall, spawning kokanee trout gather in the turqouise pools of Waldo Lake, Oregons cleanest and largest high mountain lake. In this very pool, in fact, I saw the flashing red sides of hundreds of fish. This painting is a moment in time, a peaceful October day, when the colors and light play so nicely together that all one can do is be still and take it in.

Not far south of Corvallis, Oregon lies the William L. Finley Wildlife Refuge, known for its huge flocks of migratory birds in the winter months. Lesser known is Mill Hill, above the wetlands, where an eclectic woodland of giant trees grows. I was inspired to capture the mystery of this woodland on a foggy, winter afternoon.

Northeast of Lake Meade, where my grandmother’s home town of St. Thomas was submerged beneath the reservoir in the 1930s, lies a landscape aflame with the most intense, fantastically sculpted red rocks. This work is inspired by a journey through Valley of Fire State Park and its maze-like monoliths and canyons, where late afternoon light casts the land in striking color and shadow.

It may sound strange to talk about stone in terms of personality, but in Joshua Tree National Park, it’s a thing. The rock in JT is massive but also finely sculpted, giving it a special quality that reminds one of faces and fantastic creatures - sort of like cloud watching. Similarly, it can also be hard to capture. This work recedes into shadow while pulling forward into full sunlight, lending depth and solidity to the stone. The foreground pinnacles reminded me of human figures, which give the scene an ineffable sense of presence and mystery I feel in this landscape.

Looking across the vastness of the Grand Canyon from this classic vantage point on the south rim is an iconic experience of the American west. For me, the experience brings up feelings of awe and humility in the scale of time and space revealed by the canyon - qualities I strived to express in this large work. The Colorado River is just visible in the bottom of the canyon.

While hiking from a remote part of the Three Sisters Wilderness below Broken Top over the pass to the Green Lakes Basin, I turned and beheld a lovely framing of what, in my opinion, is one of the most beautiful mountains in Oregon. From a distance, like many Oregon volcanic peaks, Broken top looks fairly uniform in color. The closer you get, the brighter the colors reveal themselves to be. Here, the mountain rises in the distance but hints its hidden rainbows. This interpretation of that view evokes the sense of freedom, altitude and wide open spaces that make this one of my favorite places to explore.

In the height of winter, the sun sets quite a ways south along this part of the central Oregon coast, turning the ocean to quicksilver. This is a magical place, filled with secret coves and beaches just out of reach, the last frontier before the wild Pacific. This painting evokes a moment of mystery and light characteristic of the rugged PNW coast.

A woodland meadow of Oregon white oak trees, seemingly illuminated from within by strong June sun, and framed by conifer forest. This is a landscape native to western Oregon, where a few fragments of the original oak savanna remain in and around the Willamette Valley. There’s something special about it that has always inspired me. I painted this scene to convey the sense of space and aliveness of the forest and meadow, and to offer an invitation to step within.

There’s something about the quality of light in Bryce Canyon that sets it apart from any other place I’ve experienced. The layers of ash, compressed and eroded over millennia into a vast network of spires and gullies, seem to refract light in a unique way. Here, not long after sunrise, the great bowl of sculpted land glows with light. Bryce Point rises in the background at over 8200 feet elevation. In this work I aimed to express the intensity and variation of color of Bryce, combined with the softness of distance of a clear morning.
